Varnishing Miss Marlow
Does anyone else find varnishing oddly therapeutic? There’s something about that very first slow pull of the brush… the way the varnish glides across the surface and the colours deepen instantly. It’s the moment a painting finally exhales. I’ve just finished varnishing Miss Marlow, our little Siberian diva, and this step always feels like closure. The last gesture. The quiet “we’re done.” There’s a deep satisfaction in that final pass of the brush, almost like honouring the hours, the layers, the decisions, the love that went into it. Tell me I’m not the only one who enjoys this part? I’m using gloss varnish Gamvar by Gamblin. Https://mazartacademy.com/

Masquerade. My latest oil painting (tutorial out in January).
COMING JANUARY “Masquerade” We all wear a mask now and then, sometimes to hide sadness, sometimes just to stay upright. In this new portrait, I’m exploring that feeling through classical technique and absolute simplicity. Because here’s the truth most people miss: Realism doesn’t need dozens of mixes. It needs four. I start every painting, portrait, pet, landscape, anything, with four underpainting tones: two lights and two darks. Those four values map the light, carve the form, and hold the entire structure together before colour ever enters the picture. Then I match them with four premixed colour tones created from a simple split-primary palette. (Yes there’s a tutorial for that too) Four values in the underpainting. Four values in colour. Eight decisions, holding an entire portrait steady. It isn’t complicated. It’s disciplined. When you understand light and dark, you can build realism from the ground up with astonishing clarity. Masquerade arrives in January, a portrait about masks, truth, and the power of classical technique stripped right back to its essentials. 2026 is the year we deepen the craft.
