Varnishing Oil & Acrylic Paintings

Two bottles of Gamblin picture varnish, one Gloss and one Satin, with red labels and black caps on a white background.

When it comes to finishing an oil painting, a final varnish not only enhances the colours but also protects the surface for years to come. I use Gamblin Gamvar, which comes in three finishes—Gloss, Matte, and Satin—so you can choose the level of sheen that suits your style and the mood of the artwork. I tend to reach for Satin for its gentle glow or Gloss when I want to bring out the depth and richness of the colours.

Gamblin’s varnish brushes come in large and medium sizes, designed specifically for smooth, even application of varnish without streaks or brush marks. For my work, I prefer the medium-sized brush—it offers excellent control and coverage, making it the perfect tool for achieving a flawless finish on pet portraits and detailed paintings alike.
